Following the Brands Hatch race weekend, when both the DPE Motorsport Alfa Romeo Giulietta cars experienced engine problems, the team headed to Italy in a bid to cure the issue. Team Principal Derek Palmer Snr is satisfied with the outcome of the trip, but the journey itself wasn’t without its own dramas.
“Two of our technical team, Ricky and John, loaded the two engines into an estate car and headed for Italy”, commented Derek. “They stopped off in Zurich to stay with Derek (Palmer) on the way down and then continued down to the Romeo Ferraris workshop south of Milan where the engines were stripped and inspected.
“It turned out to be a similar issue with both engines and it was something that Romeo Ferraris had seen in their WTCR cars, so they knew the solution. It’s actually a production item that failed; they’ve replaced that part on both our engines and so we shouldn’t have a problem with that again.
“On the way back home with the repaired engines, Ricky and John stayed with Derek again but when they left they hadn’t gone more than around 10km when the car broke down. They got it going again and it then didn’t miss a beat for the rest of the journey, but it’s the last thing you need when you’re on the homeward stretch of such a long journey.”
The two Alfa Romeos will receive a shakedown at Knockhill before heading to Castle Combe for the next race weekend on July 14th/15th. The team’s regular driver pairing of Derek Palmer and Robert Gilmour will drive the cars at the Wiltshire circuit.
